Work Description
The kitchen was relocated from the outdated back addition to the center of the home, creating an open-concept living space. The old kitchen became a third bedroom—ideal for a neighborhood filled with young families.
Ceilings were raised in the living room, middle bedroom, and main bath for an airy feel. The living room now features energy-efficient folding glass doors that open to a spacious deck, seamlessly connecting indoors and outdoors. A large picture window in the Primary Loft captures stunning ocean views. Exposed steel beams add rustic charm while providing structural support. The loft, now the primary suite with an ensuite, was moved to the rear for privacy and tranquility.
The kitchen blends modern convenience with rustic elegance, featuring black stainless steel appliances, dark cabinetry, and engineered stone countertops. Bathrooms follow a rich, moody design—earthy tones in the loft ensuite, and a white, gray, and wood palette on the main floor with oversized windows.
The expansive deck wraps around the home, leading to a hidden path connecting to the Baden-Powell Trail. Perched on a steep mountainside, each tier offers breathtaking views of the səl̓ilw̓ət inlet below.
This renovation is a harmonious blend of contemporary updates and timeless cabin charm, creating a home that fully embraces its scenic surroundings while offering modern comforts and style.
About the Location - Panorama Drive in Deep Cove
Panorama Drive is one of Deep Cove’s most coveted streets, offering breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Say Nuth Khaw Yum inlet. This scenic waterfront community blends natural beauty with a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere, making it an ideal place to settle down.
Perfect for young families, the area is well-equipped with excellent schools, daycare facilities, and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. Whether it’s kayaking in the calm waters, hiking through lush forested trails, or simply enjoying the charm of the local shops and cafés, Deep Cove provides a balanced lifestyle that feels both connected and peaceful.
Originally a retreat for families looking to escape the fast pace of Vancouver, Deep Cove has evolved into a thriving and highly sought-after residential area. With its strong sense of community, picturesque surroundings, and easy access to urban conveniences, it remains a cherished place to call home for those who appreciate the perfect blend of nature and city living.
Challenges
The lot’s corner features a protected creek, requiring strict compliance with district bylaws to prevent any construction debris from entering the water—violations would result in heavy fines. Given the creek’s sensitive nature, Smithwood took extensive measures to safeguard the area. The home’s deconstruction was especially challenging, as we carefully dismantled a non-functioning fireplace brick by brick and meticulously accounted for every nail and screw removed from the structure.

The investors were committed to preserving the charm of the original 1931 cabin while making it safe and functional for renters. Once a recreational retreat, the cabin held sentimental value, and maintaining its rustic character was a top priority. However, there was also significant potential to enhance the space and improve its usability.
Key updates included reworking the loft to accommodate a new ensuite, increasing ceiling height for a more open feel, and expanding the layout to allow for additional rooms. The extensive deck was rebuilt, and the back patio was reconfigured to ensure safety and durability. Modern fixtures and finishes were carefully integrated, complementing the existing paneled walls to create a balanced blend of old and new. These thoughtful renovations honored the cabin’s history while making it a comfortable home.
